A new product (management book) is born

My first book, “Practical Product Management” is now available for shipment to most European countries.

Four years ago, I felt the urge to share the things I learnt through 15 years of product management in technology driven companies. Having read a lot on the various topics that make up product management and having experienced what works and what not in reality, it struck me how many senior managers still made basic mistakes in the strategic choices that are needed to build a solid product portfolio.

At the same time, I was often disappointed in the availability and the content of existing literature on the subject: while many of them contained precious information and insightful theoretical models, I often missed the practical approach to realize the goals. How do I translate a theory or model into a day-to-day way of working?

Both reasons drove into writing this book. It took some time – not being a dedicated full-time writer – but today, I am pleased with the result and I believe I have succeeded in realizing the goals. Practical Product Management approaches every possible aspect of product management:  new product introductions, portfolio management, requirement specifications, competitive analysis, pricing, strategic thinking, life cycle management and many more. Rather than describing complex theoretical frameworks, it is a collection of best practices, templates, tools, and checklists that have proven their value in the real world.

I hope the book matters to junior product managers that are thrown into the job. It is intended to give them a quick start into the discipline of product management. It is written to help avoid the obvious traps that come with the overwhelming responsibility. It is the book I wish I had when I started the challenge many years ago. At the same time, the book draws a framework in which product managers operate. Managers in start-ups and fast-growing companies that are feeling the need for a more structured product approach will hopefully be inspired by the description of product management tasks in this book. I believe there is some value in this writing for everyone involved with product management, even if it is only about triggering some new ideas or about reminding about practices that got lost in the excessive firefighting workload that many product managers are dealing with on a daily base.

I am convinced that product management is one of the most exciting, valuable and rewarding functions in a company. It touches every single aspect of a business and builds the foundation for success. I wish you at least as much fun as I had in dealing with the product management responsibilities!
