Practical Product Management

I wrote “Practical Product Management” for 3 reasons:

First, I had learned so much over the past years about product management and experienced what works and what not, it was time to share it in a structured way.

Secondly, I saw so many basic mistakes around me against the basic principles and values of product management, even by so-called senior product managers, that I felt the urgent need to document the best practices I had learned and explain why some ways don’t work.

Thirdly, I had read a massive amount of books, articles and trainings on product management and found that most of them juggle with heavy theoretic models but failed in explaining how to actually start at it in practice. I felt that a clear and practical, down-to-earth description on what and how to do it, was simply still missing. So that’s what you can expect from this book. It is the book that I wished I had received when I first started in Product Management.

Practical Product Management touches every aspect of product management: new product introductions, portfolio management, requirement specifications, competitive analysis, pricing, strategic thinking, and life cycle management.

Rather than describing complex theoretical frameworks, it is a collection of best practices, templates, tools, and checklists that have proven their value in the real world. While rooted in the technology sector, the concepts are widely applicable in other industries.
This book will get junior product managers up and running in no time, while continuing to serve as an inspiration and reference for more experienced product leaders. It can inspire company management on how to structure product management and what roles to assign to support business growth. Expect answers on following questions:

How do I write product requirement specifications?
What is needed to launch my new product in the market?
How do I find the right product portfolio balance?
Where do I find information about competition?
What is the right price for this new product?
